15 years have passed since alex cortex began to create his own vision of electronic music - timeless and beyond trends, without a buzz or hype, steadily winning the following of djs and home-listeners, collectors and critics worldwide. his style can be described as unpredictable to a certain point, while maintaining high aesthetic standards. playful with quotes and references, always low-key and focused on psychedelic immersion into sound that shifts the attention from the artist to the music. kihon is a very personal effort, as suggested by the self-portrait on the cover that puts ear, eye, and mouth -reception and production- into context. the carefully elaborated design of this gatefold double lp speaks as a whole and in true minimalist fashion about the passing of time, without ever declaring nostalgia to be a means for itself. this also reflects in the music. alex cortex evades large gestures and obvious quotes, but is certainly conscious of locating his album within a framework of references to other works of electronic music that are important for his own musical evolution. in 11 nameless tracks, kihon takes us on a journey through organic worlds of sound that invites us to flow with the music and connect with the feelings contained in it. the title kihon that relates to japanese martial arts translates to basics or fundamentals, the training of which does not even cease when reaching master grades. those basics that are passed on beyond time are also the foundation of this album. by concentrating on the bare essentials, the music begins to speak, turning the album into a harmonic whole. kihon therefore is also a return to listening, away from a utilitarian perception of music as a background sound. this does not mean it would not work perfectly well in a club context -in the right hands it indeed does- but more notably, kihon is a work of art worth your attention and destined to stand the test of time

while yacht refers to >dystopia (the earth is on fire)< as a post-apocalyptic fight song and a cautionary tale, the tracks chant-along melodies and unsparing synths nudge listeners far closer to dance than despair. from the sound of things, that reaction will likely also be elicited by two new remixes of the portland duos song, from their 2011 long player shangri-la. legendary production duo justin strauss and bryan mette, aka whatever/whatever, completely rework the sound of >dystopia< on their version, reorienting it with heavy doses of funk. while the original rides atop buzzing synths, the whatever/whatever remix adds a thick bassline and shimmery keyboards that leap out like solar flares. on the flipside, uk-based emperor machine starts their dystopia remix with a dubby feel – every vocal echoing endlessly – and then u-turns into wholly a updated, yet classic, disco sound. the rhythms are sultry, slinking behind a deep, repeated, synthline, its a recipe for an unexpectedly smooth, subtly hypnotic, and utterly danceworthy song.

hdr002 takes us straight to 90s house territory with four new edits from nycs marcos cabral. the a-side opens with >sym phon<, an anthemic filtered piano house jam that opens up wide and swallows all in its path. a2 gives us >better think again< with sticatto chords and twinkling keys in a jersey-esque house sound. the b-side hits with >in the sea<, starting off with a giant slow tribal beat and then morphs into a psychedelically swirling synth workout. b2 wraps things up with >get get get< turning our ears to old school chicago house. rolands tr-707 lays the percussion down while the chant of >get in the groove< repeats into infinity

first of three parts of the first wurst compilation with 10 new exclusive tracks alltogether. part i boasts new york upstarts soho808, lisbon legend tiago, merc alum chicago damn, and new jersey outliers pink stallone. following appearances on soul claps social experiment 002 mix on no. 19 and jamie jones fabric 59 mix, soho808 land on wurst with >reach< feat. safiyah, easily their most accomplished work to date, fusing their now-patented slow house sound with a little of the citys r&b swagger. pink stallone hooks up with strictly rhythm alum joey washington on >help yourself<, a ridiculously nasty slice of future funk. tiago gives >peanuts not working< his i am the automan treatment, channeling the 80s cosmic sound for a driving dancefloor workout. rounding out the ep is chicago damns >romcom<, a smoky, subdued number, hinting at detroits beatdown sound with the mans now signature mpc moves.

chicagos ricardo miranda makes his debut for the ace stilove4music label, maintaining a fine year in which he has already dropped some serious heat on rush hour sub-label hour house is your rush and his own noble square imprint. title track >102point7< is all jagged synths, throbbing arpeggios, slashing claps and a rolling acid groove, marking it out as one of his most incendiary productions to date. on the flip >rotary cells< is deeper still, a 909-led jacker with undulating layers of sub bass augmented by a wonderfully woozy vocal which extols the virtues of true chicago house. this is followed by >greenline<, a stripped back jam with scuttling hats and the kind of paranoid synth melody that wouldnt sound out of place in jeff mills something in the sky series. this is dark, raw, pulsating dance music - highly recommended.

on this vinyl co-founder of net-label chevengur melody sol collected the best works of talented residents of the label living in far away cities and towns of eastern part of europe. you wont ever get such a compilation from famous labels or producers. here you can listen to underground sound of telegraph (promising minsk duo), groovy tunes of east soul person (disco birds) and experimental-dance music of uncle deep (ethereal sound, appetit, denkbar). a record for the dance-floor and a pleasant home listening.

dresdens cult label uncanny valley returns with the charming catalogue number six. following up jacob korns first artist ep for the label its c-beams turn now to continue the series of artist eps. break sls and sandrow ms project can be referred to as a true labels child. musically, both artists got to know each other only when the label was founded. for >strollin< they lend the vocal talents by tina slotta who is associated with uncanny valley as well. the result is an irresistible house-jam. easy vibrant beats are complemented by birds twittering, warm keys and tinas carefree lyrics. jackmates remix toughen things up and transfers the tracks with mighty detroit-chords into a real monster for the dancefloor. the slightly murkier >scrapyard< takes its strength out of the interaction between its vehement beats and the c-beams-typical sound excursions. finally, the instrumental of >strollin< rounds up the ep.

for renaissance mans first single off their turbo debut lp, we have assembled a team of remixers whom we felt could live up to the playful intelligence of the original. the result is a pack befitting one of the best electronic albums of the year, a mensa-level dissection of contemporary dance music that builds on the finnish duos previous releases on dubsided, sound pellegrino and made to play.
to begin with, we enlisted a personal hero of the renaissance man boys - legendary producer herbert - who offers up a subtle, atmospheric take, adding his own vocals and introducing an esoteric pop sensibility. scottish producer (and thom yorke name-checkee) sei a checks in with a hypnotic techno groove bomb. uk vet paul woolford strikes a balance between wobble acid and melodic piano hooks.

juan jose diaz-known in the world of music as kung, is a producer of drum and bass and dubstep born in granada (spain) he has a string of dnb releases on labels as ammunition recs. (usa), melting pot (spain), suspect device, c2d (uk), black seeds (italy) and citrus (netherlands). his drum n bass releases receive good acceptance by the public and also from some major producers like misanthrop, jade, billain, and axiom to name a few. for lime dubs, kung shows his multiple talent as a dubstep producer as well. his sound is happy and dubby, hard to put in a box. its got influences from all over, from minimal techno house to his extreme bass and breaks editing.

mav s signature style is detected straight from the intro, crazy synth sounds floating through the air. a creepy atmosphere is created, the ones who saw the movie >melancholia< should feel where this can lead to. on top of that krone adds his signature basslines and we have a deep neuro drum n bass tune that will appeal to both old skool fokuz sound lovers and the neuro dnb fans. the flip makes us go back to even earlier sounds. reminiscence to the early releases on fokuz from the likes of gen, drum origins, j laze and even pete rann. let s go back!

for well roundeds 11th release bristols skinnz drops a trio of infectious and melodic creations that share a kinship with todays garage and funky house sounds whilst standing apart due to their unique character. you may know sam from his other alias baobinga. he is man who commands much respect for his collaborations with people from a wide variety of musical backgrounds and his ability to channel his influences in an unforced and colourful way.
on the skinnz releases so far he has experimented with more garage influenced beats, while retaining his trademark focus on percussive momentum. however these tracks often flow freely across boundaries and genre limits encouraged to evolve in any direction that creates excitement. previous skinnz releases have already appeared on pinchs earwax label and boka records whilst his debut outing was on one of the first compilations of music that might be termed dubstep – the classic >our sound< album on destructive.

with detroits kevin reynolds we are proud to welcome one of detroits best kept secrets as the latest member of the nsyde family. starting as an audio engineer at derrick mays seminal techno label transmat, kevin has spent most of his career helping others to shine. honing his production skills in the transmat studios refining a variety of projects, he has accumulated an impressive body of work in the background over time. with the release of nsyde 002 kevin has now set the focus on his solo career and the years of experience and raw talent have truly left their mark. showcasing his savvy for deep mesmerizing grooves, he brings us two tracks for the mind, the body and the soul, ready to conquer dancefloors worldwide. fusing raw tribal elements with warm strings and chords, kevin creates his own fresh trademark flavor, paying homage to the original techno soul of his hometown along the way. keeping traditions alive by retro-perspective modernism. with a unique sound, lauded by the likes of gilles peterson and osunlade, kevin reynolds is the perfect match for the nsyde musical philosophy.

the second part of the ki split series is a feature of our homegrown talents christian loeffler and steffen kirchhoff. the two friends are part of the ki family since the beginning (loeffler was responsible for the first release on ki and kirchhoff for the third). both artist have a close connection in sound aesthetics and atmosphere, since they still inspire each other every day. on the ki split series 2 you can listen to christian loeffler and steffen kirchhoff experimenting with beautiful samples and underlining the whole piece with their unique sound structure. both in their respective very own romantic approach to deep, melancholic techno music.

recorded in late 2010 and mixed in a remote studio during the finnish snowstorms of early 2011, donky pitch present >the trick ep<, by helsinki resident and skweee pioneer v.c. six original tracks of synth soaked computer funk, electro inspired slow jams and colourful hip hop heaters. v.c. has been making moves in the skweee scene since the early days (as a solo artist and as 1/4 of supergroup yt). his combination of layered synths, hip hop beats and that type of funk only found in the cold reaches of the nordic region have scored him releases on every skweee label going (flogsta danshall / harmnia / mssy / ddpop / disques mazout) as well as ramp recordings. we felt it only right that he commanded our first true foray into the scandinavian electro funk sound of skweee.

next up in the sofrito super singles series is the highlife underground ep – celebrating the bassline heavy sound of 80s highlife.
on the a-side we have teamed up with new london producer drumtalk for a remix of ghanas mpese mpese band. initially released in 1986 the original track was an extended medley – the remix balances the swing of the original with heavy bass and chopped chords, bringing the track up to date while respecting the vibe of the original – an intense example of futuristic highlife that bridges the gap between hackney and accra.
the flip sees the sofrito crew present a killer groove courtesy of the canadoes dance band, originally released on the rogers all stars label in 1982. a minor key intro drops into bouncing drums, handclaps and a bubbling bassline that build and build into a deep and unrelenting groove…

limited 1st run on marbled grey vinyl !3rd in this superb deep techno series, support from: sandwell district, scratcha dva, sigha, james ruskin, mark broom, claude young, steven tang, billy nasty, delta funktionen, miles sagnia, morphosis, ben sims, commix, jerome sydenham, regis, shifted, function etc... surface return with the third in its beneath the surface series, following on from the extremely well received between worlds release. journeys to the deep volume 2. is an important and personal record to nick and the surface camp in general, paying tribute to family elder jessica dunton and her influence on nick and his families lives, and her long fight to continue living against the odds! facing the heavens- sees nick take on his much lauded ever vivid moniker delivering an extremely fitting tribute that somehow blurs the boundaries between the early classic emotive sounds of 90s uk techno, house and 70s funk.. cutting synth lines drenched in soul develop throughout the track taking us on a deep yet strangely uplifting journey, the chord sequence beautifully maintains the mood, but for us at the office its all about the detail, piercing moog leads, emotive strings and rhodes, all driving along at pace on top of a reese type melodic bassline and rolling 808 drums. this is as comfortable in a club as it is at home. timeless in its approach, with a purist touch. on the flip nick duntons >leaving the planet< is an altogether different beast.. beautifully produced and super deep, this is the classic dunton sound of late, harmonic drifts and carl craig 69 era strings morph between lush sustained textures, that somehow float above the powerful pulsing bass, that imitates a heartbeat and really gives this track a haunting feeling that when coupled with the hypnotic phasing drums, and fluttering reverberating stabs make it is as deep as the sea, yet beautifully bass heavy. this is nick taking his wide screen cinematic sound and stripping it bare whilst losing none of the evocative touches that have made his recent music so affecting
